Protect Yourself From Property Fraud With This Free Alert Service in Pinellas County

Unfortunately, reports of property and mortgage fraud in the State of Florida have been growing over the years. According the FBI, property fraud is one of the FASTEST growing crimes in America. Homeowners are increasingly becoming victims of property fraud and while Pinellas County and the Tampa Bay area have not been immune to this problem, thankfully Pinellas County is now offering homeowners a FREE property fraud alert system to help them protect their homes and their identity.

EVERYONE who owns a home or real property in Pinellas County should sign up for this free monitoring service…right now. Here’s how it works:

Property fraud happens when a scammer illegally uses the property you own for financial gain. They do this by recording fraudulent deeds that appear to be signed by the homeowner, transferring the property into another person’s name. Scammers will also record fraudulent liens against properties as well, holding homeowner’s hostage until they are paid off (think fraudulent mechanic’s liens and phony mortgages).

Anyone reading the local news has likely seen deed scams in the headlines this year. To check out some of the latest instances of deed scams in our area, see the articles below:

Fraud alert can save you from losing property

While these articles may seem scary, the Pinellas County Clerk’s Office has implemented a new program called the “Property Fraud Alert Service” that you can sign up for HERE on their website. (Remember, there is NO charge for this service. It is best to only sign up through the Clerk’s website)

Florida Counties Participating in Property Fraud Alert

This free public service allows you to register your name with their monitoring system. If any documents with your name on them are recorded in the Official Records of the Pinellas County Clerk’s Office, you’ll be notified immediately. The alert will be received either by phone or email and will include the document number and type, date it was recorded, and names on the document. If you own a home with someone else (spouse, relatives, etc) we recommend registering their names too.  You may also want to consider registering your maiden name as well. Folks with common names may get alerts that don’t pertain to their property, but again, it’s better to be alerted than find out about deed fraud when it’s too late.

For more information on this service, visit or call (727) 400-3315. Remember, it just takes a few minutes to register and could save one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make from fraud.
